Match Report

PAOK slip up in Heraklion

03.09.2023

The Double-headed Eagle lacked the necessary freshness and composure after the demanding game in mid-week against Hearts, and despite being in control of the match the visitors were hit with a sucker punch late goal against OFI who claimed the three points from this Matchday 3 Stoiximan Super League clash.

Razvan Lucescu made several changes to his lineup with the goal of keeping hold of the ball and patiently building attacks on the opposition goal. On the other hand, OFI played a more withdrawn role with the aim of waiting for PAOK to come forward and hit them on the counter attack.

The first 20 minutes passed without much in the way of chances in front of the two goals, apart from a shot by Meiado and a header by Brandon that did not find the target. In the 23rd minute, a decision by match referee Diamantopoulos and VAR prompted a storm of protests from PAOK, as Karo put in a two-footed challenge on Brandon. Diamantopoulos gave only a foul, and Evangelou agreed with him, in what was an extremely marginal phase.

The 0-0 scoreline remained the same up to half-time. Lucescu started the second half with some changes in the attacking line, and his players upped the ante, but again the goal did not come, despite chances from Murg and Konstantelias , both of whome failed to score.

The Double-headed Eagle coach brought all the available ammunition on the pitch, with Meite making his debut and Samatta returning from his injury. PAOK had the lion’s share of possession, but they could not find any route to OFI’s goal.

Lucescu then introcued both Tzimas and Vieirinha , changed the formation, even playing with two forwards, but although PAOK pressed, a goal was not forthcoming and OFI mainly tried to waste time.

And then, at the death and against the run of play, the home team found a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time thanks to Abada and stole the three points.

Team lineups:

OFI: Christogeorgos, Torarison, Karo (Lampropoulos 81′), Pasalidis, Vouros, Larson, Bakics (Abada 73′), Gagehos (Neira 81′), Meyado, Riera (Toral 65′), Felipe (Diko 65′).

PAOK: Kotarski, Kedziora (Vieirinha 76′), Ekong, Michailidis, Rafa Soares (Baba 65′), Ozdoev, Schwab (Meite 65′), Murg (Tzimas 76′), A.Zivkovic, Konstantelias, Brandon (Samatta 65′).
