Job done with five goals
Another excellent performance from Razvan Lucescu’s PAOK yielded a 5-1 away win over NFC Volos at the Panthessalikos Stadium, and the Double-headed Eagle are now preparing for the «battle of the Toumba» against fellow title-chasers Panathinaikos next Sunday.
It was a tough game in many ways. Apart from a difficult opponent, PAOK’s players also had to deal with a tricky pitch and bad weather conditions.
At the start of the match, it was Volos who pressed high and made life difficult for the visitors, as they did not allow them to get into any rhythm and play their game.
The first good moment of the game came in the 18th minute when Despodov unleashed a powerful shot but Kostic cleared it.
The scene was repeated four minutes later, with the Bulgarian smiling this time. Kedziora played a long ball in behind the opposition defense, Despodov met it, avoided a defender and the scored to make it 1-0.
Volos tried to respond, scoring a goal that was subsequently disallowed as offside in the 32nd minute, before PAOK took over the reins of the match again.
In the 35th minute, Brandon hit an impressive shot that struck the crossbar, only for Murg to come in first-half stoppage time and make it 2-0 with a powerful shot after a long period of sustained pressure in the Volos box.
The pattern of play in the second half was completely different. PAOK turned the match into a one-team show.
The third foal in the 52nd minute was one taken out of every coach’s dreams. An incredible passing move, followed by a clever assist by Murg and a perfect finish from Despodov for 3-0.
In the 58th minute, the home team got a goal back with Deletic on target, and they then immediately tried to push firward to take advantage of the momentum.
However, PAOK did not leave the hosts unpunished for the spaces left in between the lines by Lopes‘ players, and they managed to score two more goals.
In the 71st minute, Taison scored with a shot from inside the penalty area to make it 4-1, and then Stefanos Tzimas came off the bench to write the epilogue of the match. In the 89th minute, Taison stole the ball deep in the Volos half, opened up space for Tzimas, and at the right moment he sent him clear one-on-one with Kostic. The young PAOK striker applied a perfect finish to make it 5-1.
