Defeated by the details
PAOK put in a creditable performance at Old Trafford, going toe-to-toe with strong opposition, not allowing them to threaten while creating good chances, but in the end the details were not on their side. The Double-headed Eagle left Manchester with a 2-0 defeat, but taking from it a measure of self-confidence and the belief that if the team plays like it did at Old Trafford, then they can still achieve their goals in Europe this season.
Razvan Lucescu lined up with a three-man midfield, with Mady Kamara playing just in front of Schwab and Ozdoev . PAOK were solid, and managed to comfortably absorb United’s early pressure, before starting to execute their oewn gameplan to keep the ball and look to create their own threats going forward.
Kamara fired in a shot in the sixth minute but the ball took a deflection and went wide of Onana’s goal. Otto and Baba both made excellent tackles inside their own penalty area to deny the home side’s attacking efforts, while Kotarski was there to make a good save from a dangerous Hoylund header.
PAOK, for their part, also had two good shots on goal by Zivkovic, while in the 39th minute, Onana had to make a great save from Kamara’s powerful snapshot. The teams went into the dressing rooms at half-time still at 0-0 after a closely-fought first 45 minutes.
The second half started in the worst possible way for the visitors. In the 50th minute, Bruno Fernandes sent over a cross, Diallo took the header and made it 1-0. In the 59th minute, Kotarski made an impressive stop on Diallo, after a pass from Bruno Fernandes.
PAOK did not give up and fought hard to find the equaliser.
He played with his mind, without panic in his game and all this brought a great phase in 64′. Tyson and Baba combined perfectly, the ball ended up in Tisundali, but Onana found the right angle and blocked the Moroccan’s cross.
PAOK gained confidence, kept the ball, tried to create, but against the momentum, United found a second goal.
In the 77th minute, Diallo made it 2-0 with a spot-kick and effectively ended the game prematurely.
Nothing changed until the final whistle and PAOK left empty-handed from a game that was good and deserved something more.
