Match Report

A draw at half-time and next stop... Toumba

06.08.2024

Against a tough team, in a stadium with a difficult atmosphere and in a match that went wrong for PAOK twice, the Double-headed Eagle stood firm in Sweden and left with a creditable 2-2 draw. Next week they will be waiting for them at Toumba Stadium where they will aim to seal qualification.

As expected, the home side came on strong from the kick-off, forcing PAOK into making mistakes and missed two great chances early on, hitting the post and Kotarski also making a good save to keep it 0-0.

PAOK tried to balance the tempo, keep the ball and play their game, but in the 28th minute Malmo found a way to punish them.

After Nanasi’s corner kick, Janssen headed in to make it 1-0.

PAOK tried to respond immediately, but Brandon’s prodded effort from A. Zivkovic’s cross did not find the target.

PAOK persisted, pressed and found the equalizer in the 42nd minute. Sastre crossed from the right, Brandon directed the ball goalwards, which the opposing keeper saved, but Taison followed up on the rebound to score for 1-1.

The second half started exactly as the first did, with Malmo hitting the woodwork. PAOK responded to that with Brandon missing after an excellent team effort in the 68th minute.

Malmö then went up the other end and executed a corner, Nanasi made the contact, PAOK’s defense did not react properly and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Razvan Lucescu made some changes, refreshed his team, and gave Tarik Tissoundali the opportunity to make his debut and in the 75th minute they found the equalizer.

It came from Despodov’s corner, with Koulierakis heading the ball on, and Baba’s shot then making it 2-2.

The two teams continued to threaten for the rest of the game, but the score did not change, with the 2-2 draw leaving everything open ahead of the return leg at Toumba Stadium.

Team lineups:

Malmo: Dahlin, Larsen, Jansson, Zetterström, Busanello, Bolin (Ali 83′), Jonsen, Peña, Nanassi, Thelin, Bothheim (Christiansen 65′).

PAOK: Kotarski, Sastre, Kedziora, Koulierakis, Baba, Schwab (Kamara 73′), Ozdoev, A.Zivkovic (Despodov 73′), Konstantelias (Murg 83′), Taison, Brandon (Tissoundali 69′).
