An away win of character and back to the top
In what was by definition a difficult assignment, PAOK managed to leave Livadeia with three points, thanks to goals from Mady Kamara and Stefan Schwab. The result took the Double-headed Eagle back to the top of the table after Matchday 7 of the 2024-25 Stoiximan Super League concluded.
Razvan Lucescu fielded 10 new faces compared to Thursday’s game against FCSB, handing Lovren and Gomez their debuts and PAOK began the match looking to dominate from the first minute.
The visitors took control of the possession in the first half but could not find a way to seriously threaten the hosts, until Tissoudali’s header from Murg’s cross. The home side also had a good chance when Zini missed the target when one-on-one against Kotarski.
PAOK then made a change for the second half, with Vieirinha replacing Otto, who felt some discomfort from a knock. The visitors started the second 45 minutes better and began to threaten with Tissoudali dangerous on two occasions, but each time Garavelis had the answers to keep him out. The home ‘keeper particularly excellend on the second effort, when he also pulled off a double save, denying Gomez on the rebound.
The coaches then made further changes, with Levadeiakos creating a great opportunity for themselves in the 72nd minute against the run of play. The referee, after using VAR, gave the home side a penalty for a challenge by Gomez in the area, but Balzi could not covnert the spot-kick and the score remained 0-0.
The home team got themselves psyched up after that and tried to press forward more, but the black and whites’ defensive play snuffed out the threats and then in the 86th minute PAOK got the breakthrough.
Vieirinha procued an inviting cross from the right, and Kamara met it perfectly to score with a header to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
The game was then put to bed in the first minute of added time. Liagas handled Konstantelias’ shot and the referee pointed to the spot. Schwab stepped up to slot home from 12 yards and make it 2-0 to PAOK.
And so PAOK collected an important three-point haul, returned to the top of the Stoiximan Super League standings and now head into the international break on a positive note, and to keep working to improve in view of the restart of domestic and European action.
