Pole position...

It was a tough game by definition, against the sixth best team in this year’s Stoiximan Super League. However, PAOK went το Lamia determined, composed, and with a clear gameplan. The result? The Double-headed Eagle left with all three points after claiming a deserved 2-0 win.

The regular season of the league championship concluded on Sunday night with PAOK finishing top of the pile, having at the same time the best attack and the best defence in the league. The Double-headed Eagle have not won anything yet, other than confidence for the difficult road ahead in the Play Offs.

Lamia lined up with a five-man defence, looked well organized and waited for PAOK to come at them. The visitors, for their part, were prepared for such tactics and showed their quality. Razvan Lucescu’s side got the ball down at their feet, were in complete control of the match, and tried to threaten in every possible way.

Switching play, playiong through their hosts, making tackles and creating plenty of chances, the only thing that was missing was a goal. Koselev saved Taison’s free-kick, Meite missed the target from a good position, Samatta wasted a great chance, while Konstantelias missed the target twice.

The first-hald ended 0-0 them, but despite the many missed opportunities, PAOK did not get disheartened. Actually it was the opposite! Lucescu’s players were impeccable in their approach. Koselev kept Lamia standing until the 70th minute, but that’s when Taison’s class shone through.

The Brazilian opened the scoring in the 71st minute with a wonderful goal which lay the foundations for victory.

Lamia did not change their attitude on the pitch. They remained defensive, only looking for goals on the counter-attack with long balls, but the tactic failed to threaten at any point.

PAOK then finally locked up the victory in stoppage time, with Baba returning to action and scoring a goal, after an assist from Brandon .

The league is now on the sidelines for a while and PAOK, with their tails up, travel to Croatia for the first battle of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
