Misfiring PAOK pay for mistakes in Peristeri

21.11.2021

PAOK missed several opportunities en route to a 2-0 defeat by Atromitos in Peristeri, with the home side scoring two goals from their only two chances to take all three points on Matchday 10 of the 2021-22 Super League Interwetten.

The Double-headed Eagle went to Athens to face the team sitting at the bottom of the league standings. But, as Razvan Lucescu and his players pointed out many times, there are no easy games. PAOK managed to completely dominate the pitch, enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession, and created several opportunities, However, in the end the visitors failed to score and were then made to pay for two mistakes as the hosts celebrated their first league win of the season at the 10th attempt.

PAOK began the match in determined mood, pressing high up and pitch and closing Atromitos deep in their own half, while also threatening the home goal of Gianniotis. At the other end of the pitch, Atromitos created their only chance of the first half in the last minute of normal time and they managed to get themselves infront with Koulouris on target after some poor defending by the black and whites.

In the second half the pattern of play did not change. PAOK continued to threaten and lost a host of chances with Akpom, VarelaKurtic and A. Zivkovic all faikling to convert good chances into goals.

A crucial moment came in the 68th minute which in effect, decided the outcome of the game. The VAR team instructed match referee Evangelou to check a call for a penalty with Varelas’s arm appearing to hinder Koulouris, and the official changed his initial decision to let the game continue in what seemed an inocuous challenge. Koulouris slotted in the resulting penalty and at that point it was game over.

PAOK did however continue to threaten, and missed a few more good chances with Akpom, Varela and Kurtic all guilty of profligacy in front of goal and there was to be no way back for the visitors.

Team lineups:

Atromitos: Gianniotis, Kivrakidis (Vasilantonopoulos 84′), Stroungis, Papadopoulos, Galvao, Casteliano, Natsos, Salomon, Charisis (Denic 73′), Muniz (Spiridonovic 84′), Koulouris (Klonaridis 77′).

PAOK: Paschalakis, Rodrigo (Sidcley 62′), Crespo, Varela, Taylor, Kurtic, Schwab (Murg 62′), El Kaddouri (Esiti 81′), Biseswar (Swiderski 73′), A. Zivkovic, Akpom.
