PAOK produce a "champions" reaction in Tripoli
They entered the pitch with confidence, a clear plan and composure, as well as a desire to play his football and they did so for 95 minutes – even when everything… went wrong. And PAOK were rewarded for keeping calm as they turned a 1-0 scoreline into a 2-1 win on Matchday 12 of the 2024-25 Stoiximan Super League.
The game had a good tempo in the first 20 minutes with both teams threatening and showing the desire to attack and play enterprising football. The home team threatened first with Kotarski stopping a shot by Jablonski in the seventh minute. The Double-headed Eagle responded in the 12th minute with a header by Ozdoev , which was blocked by Tsintotas.
As the first half progressed, Asteras retreated slightly, giving PAOK more space and incentive to push forward, with Razvan Lucescu’s players besieging the hosts’ penalty area and looking for the spark that would break the deadlock.
In the 38th minute, PAOK had three shots on goal within the same phase of play, with Ozdoev final effort saved by Tsintotas after the previous two efforts had been blocked by defenders, while in the 45th minute, Murg’s shot went just wide.
The two teams started the second half in the same spirit, but the pattern if play did not change and it was PAOK who were in control. Then, against the run of play, Asteras took the lead in the 50th minute via Macheda, when the Italian converted an assist from Jablonski to put the home team in the lead.
However, Asteras’ goal had the effect of giving PAOK more desire to put things right, and in the 58th minute, a huge opportunity was missed when Tissoudali received the ball from Konstantelias in a good position, but contrived to miss his chance to level the match.
Lucescu threw on both Chalov and Despondov into the battle from the bench and the momentum of the match started to swing in the visitors’ favour following the PAOK coach’s substitutions.
In the 68th minute, Konstantelias, Otto and Despondov combined perfectly and the Bulgarian scored the equalizing to make it 1-1. Three minutes later, Otto fired in an effort on goal but the ball hit the post, while shortly afterwards Tsintotas denied Chalov in a one-on-one situation.
Redemption finally came for the Double-headed Eagle in the 85th minute, from another key change made by Lucescu. Baba came off the bench, combined perfectly with Chalov and with a powerful shot the latter clinched a 2-1 win for PAOK.
