Injury-time shock
In a wide open match, with lots of opportunities created in both boxes, SKODA Xanthi and PAOK drew 1-1, the home side equalizing at stoppage time.
SKODA Xanthi started stronger, taking advantage of PAOK’s numbness. They failed to convert their chances though and enabled the “Double-Headed Eagle” to find their footing and level the encounter.
Giannis Mystakidis became decisive after the first 25 minutes as he was the most dangerous player on the pitch. He first had a left-foot shot on the woodwork and then scored the opener, heading home a cross by Nikos Korovesis. PAOK were in command and didn’t relinquish the reins of the game until the final whistle.
SKODA Xanthi had a shot on post after the interval, but that was the only real danger they created. Igor Tudor fielded more players on the axis, enhanced the defensive line and PAOK dominated proceedings and lost 1-2 big chances to increase their lead.
But the visitors failed to seal their win and the home side equalized at stoppage time against the run of play with a header by Soltani.
Garry Rodrigues failed to convert a big chance he got, as his shot was saved by Cennamo and SKODA Xanthi held on to their point.
The draw isn’t a satisfying result for Igor Tudor, but the team must shift their focus fast, with the tough away encounter against AEK in Athens just around the corner.
