Cold defeat…
PAOK couldn’t keep their winning streak in the league and lost 2-0 to Olympiacos in packed Toumba. It was a balanced encounter, weighing towards PAOK’s side statistics-wise. However the visitors drew first blood in their opening plays and managed to maintain their lead until the end.
Despite having more possession and more efforts on goal (6-5) than their rivals, PAOK found themselves trailing 2-0 by half-time, due to the strike of Ideye and Milivojević’s header. On the other side of the pitch, Róbert Mak, Stefanos Athanasiadis and Dimitris Pelkas were denied by Roberto whose heroics earned him the Vodafone Man of the Match award afterwards.
Igor Tudor introduced Dimitar Berbatov after the interval. The Bulgarian star helped keep the ball closer to Olympiacos’ box and multiply goalscoring chances. Klaus came close to a goal, but his shot was cleared by Κasami off the line. Alexandros Tziolis’s towering hader was saved by Roberto, who also denied Miguel Vítor’s effort who collected the rebound.
After the final whistle, Toumba faithful applauded the effort of the squad and our players saluted them back, grateful for their unique presence and support in a match that was preceded by a most emotional scene: players of both teams placing flowers at the monument of the six PAOK supporters who met their untimely death at Tempi.
