PAOK B slip to defeat by Veria [with pictures]
PAOK B conceded goals from two set-piece plays as they went down to a 2-1 defeat against Betsson Super League 2 leaders Veria on Matchday 21.
The Double-headed Eagle conceded a goal in each half – both from free-kicks – but fought to the end against an experienced and strong opponent, managing to score a wonderful goal in the finale.
PAOK B’s next game is the previously postponed match in Volos, against Olympiacos Volos, on March 2.
The first-half proved to be an even affair, with the possession of the ball equally shared. PAOK showed some good passing movement and they also had a good chance to score through Panidis’ header in the 15th minute. Veria, however, were the side that found a breakthrough courtesy of Kace’s free-kick in the 31st minute. The hosts also had a good chance with Pasha’s shot in the 42nd minute, but PAOK B ‘keeper Talichmanidis was exactly where he needed to be to block the effort.
In the second half , the pattern of play remained similar with PAOK trying to build attacks down the flanks. In fact, hthe visitors got themselves in good shooting positions twice, in the 61st minute with Salamouras and in the 66th minute with a shot by Gaitanidis, but Vellidis was there to block both efforts. In the 71st minute, from another set phase, Veria then made it 2-0 with Mourgos the player on target. The hosts also came close to a third goal in the 82nd minute, but Talichmanidis stopped the danger created by Giakoumakis’s shot.
There was still a sting in the tail of the game as the Double-headed Eagle reduced the deficit to 2-1 just before the final whiste with the nice header from Fasidis following a corner taken by Gaitanidis.
