On this day: Undefeated Champions

On May 5th 2019 PAOK defeated PAS Giannina 2-0 at the Zosimades Stadium and made history by clinching the Super League league title without losing a single match.

05.05.2020

PAOK’s journey to the 2018-19 league title will forever be etched into the memory as one of the most prominent examples of absolute domination. The Dikefalos tou Vorra finished the league season with 26 wins in 30 matches, with just four draws and zero defeats. It was a feat which made the club only the second team in the history of Greek football to go for an entire season without defeat since Panathinaikos in 1964.

Razvan Lucescu’s team kicked off the season with a difference of -2 and finished it with a difference of +5. The team did not give their opponents the slightest chance of threatening their dominance, demonstrating the kind of consistency and cold blood which is rarely seen, with an endless hunger for victories and admittedly playing some excellent football in the process.

Everyone expected that at some point the impressive unbeaten streak would stop, but these expectations proved unfounded. And the epilogue of one of the most special chapters in the history of Greek football was written in Ioannina.

PAOK began the match a little slower than usual, but still hit the woodwork and was in control with the scores 0-0 going into half-time. After the interval, Dimitris Pelkas took on the role of creator and teed up Chuba Akpom for a 60th-minute opener into an empty net, and in the 79th minute, Evgen Shakhov, scored just seconds after coming off the bench with a header to make it 2-0.

Lucescu’s tears during the post-match press conference and the wild celebrations at the end showed the significance of the achievement.

PAOK line-up:

Paschalakis , Crespo, Ingason, Tosca, Giannoulis, Oliveira (79′ Shakhov), Canas, Jaba (81′ Swiderski), Biseswar (69′ Henrique), Pelkas, Akpom.
