On this day: The unbeaten run against Olympiacos

On April 10 1991 PAOK defeated Olympiacos 3-2 at the Toumba to stretch their unbeaten run in home matches against the Piraeus club to 21.

10.04.2020

It all began with a goalless draw between the two clubs in Thessaloniki on January 3 1971, and ended up being the best unbeaten home record in the 61-year history of the Greek top flight between two teams. PAOK recorded 21 matches in total against Olympiacos without defeat in a run that included 19 wins for the Dikefalos tou Vorra with a goals record of 47-11.

On April 10 1991 came the match which was the last of that streak, with PAOK under the guidance of interim coach Christos Terzanidis while Olympiacos were under the stewardship of Oleg Blokhin and a trio of Russian stars in the team.

The match began in a similar fashion which characterized clashes between the two clubs in Thessaloniki, with PAOK taking the lead early through Alexis Alexiou in the fourth minute with a header. Panagiotis Sofianopoulos headed home an equalizer in the 14th minute, and so the two teams went to the dressing rooms at half time on level terms.

After half-time, Giorgos Skartados found the target twice with a pair of shots in the 65th and 78th minutes to make the scores 3-1 and spark jubilant celebrations among the 20,000-strong crowd. Before the finish, Kofidis (83′) grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors to make the final score 3-2.

PAOK’s starting lineup for the match:

Gitsioudis, Alexiou, Plitsis (Hassan), Skardatos, Mitsibonas, Karageorgiou, Lagonidis, Tolba, Alexioulis (63’ Basmanas), Anastasiadis, Borbokis.
