On this day: Frantzeskos’ record
On March 27 1997 PAOK played host to Panathinaikos in the 27th round of the Greek top flight at the Toumba. The match remains etched in history as the moment Kostas Frantzeskos set an incredible record in Greek football which still stands today.
The 1996-97 season was the best of Kostas Frantzeskos’ career. He spent the first half of the season at OFI (13 games, six goals) before joining PAOK for the second half (20 games, 16 goals).
And from those 22 goals scored by Mr Freekick, 12 of them were from direct set-pieces. That performance produced a record that still stands today in Greek football, while he was only beaten to top spot in the scoring charts overall by Alekos Alexandris, who took the league top scorer’s crown with 23 goals.
That night at the Toumba in a very entertaining match between PAOK and Panathinaikos, both teams missed good chances, but it was PAOK who claimed all three points in a 1-0 win. The goal, of course, came from the boot of Frantzeskos from a free-kick in the 87th minute.
PAOK’s starting lineup:
Michopoulos, Kapetanopoulos (45′ Pyrvos), Tasiopoulos, Kolobourdas, Sidiropoulos, Maragos, Frantzeskos, Toursounidis (80′ Zafeiriou), Zagorakis, Dymkowski, Vryzas (66′ Inembolidis).
