PAOK started strongly, took ball possession and confined Asteras into their box. Mattheou went close to an opener in the 13th minute firing his angled shot narrowly wide. Three minutes later, Stathopoulos dribbled his way into the area, but the rival goalkeeper acrobatically volleyed out his strike.

In the 34th minute, PAOK captain Chatzistravos limped out of the pitch with an injury and the pace of the game dropped.

After the interval, the “Two-Headed Eagle” remained in command. In the 56th minute, they wasted a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead. Stathopoulos drew a block from Asteras’s goalkeeper, Mattheou collected the rebound but made a mess of his shot.

Asteras encountered open spaces towards the end, but the fine reaction of PAOK’s defence prevented any danger for Siampanis’s goal. The match was decided deep into stoppage time, when substitute Papadopoulos was brought down into the area and earned a penalty, converted by Lyratzis.
