Mame Thiam joins PAOK

PAOK FC announce the signing of Mame Baba Thiam from Juventus FC on loan for a year, with a buy-out clause for next season. The player will wear the No 7 shirt.

31.08.2016

Born on 9 October 1992 in Nguidile, Senegal, Mame Baba Thiam left for Italy at a young age. He learned his footballing trade at Real Sam Marco Academy in Venice and then joined the younth ranks of ACD Treviso.

He moved for FC Internazionale Milan and on the 2009-10 season he played on loan for Sassuolo’s second string. He made his professional debut in Italy’s third tier with US Avellino 1912 and in 2012-13 he played for FC Südtirol.

In July 2013, he moved on a free transfer to SS Virtus Lanciano 1924 and stayed there for two seasons, conjuring 12 goals in 58 appearances in Serie B. He attracted the interest of Juventus FC with the Turin club paying 800.000 euros to purchase him in the summer of 2015. The foreign quota of the “Vecchia Signora” was complete though and the Senegalese winger was shipped on loan to SV Zulte Waregem.

Thiam was a vital cog in Zulte’s fine run in the Belgian league, helping them to a 6th place finish with 9 goals in 29 matches. After his loan, he returned to Juventus, followed part of their preseason training and then signed for the PAOK, becoming the first player from Senegal to wear the black-and-white shirt.
