“We are all to blame for the season”

Giorgos Georgiadis’s press conference, after the final whistle of the encounter against Asteras Tripolis.

07.06.2015

Here is what PAOK coach said:

On the encounter:

«There is not much to say. Congratulations to Asteras. They were resourceful once more and took advantage of the few chances they had».

On his work since taking over:

«This season ended in utter failure. We didn’t do well in Greece or in Europe. When I was asked by Mr. Savvidis to take over, I couldn’t refuse. I was aware of the difficulties ahead. We tried to work on the players’ physical condition as much as possible, improve their defending and attacking performances. We caught a glimpse of those elements in all games. But when a team fail to score from 130 attempts on goal, they are condemned to fail. In the play-offs we created the same number of goal attempts with Panathinaikos».

On the fans’ reaction:

«I am aware that a section of the fans were against me from minute one. I didn’t speak last season when I was labeled as a failure when we were missing so many players ahead of the Greek Cup final. This comes at a huge personal cost. I wish to thank Mr. Savvidis, Mr. Angelidis and most of the players for their effort. I detest populism. I feel I have contributed to the club. I am sorry I was faced with tough situations these last three seasons».

On his share of responsibility:

«I assumed responsibility and risk –and that is on me now. We are all to blame for the season but I am responsible. I will not deny that. I am trying to explain this situation from its sporting view. We had not the time to change many things. The roster was unbalanced and we had to call the youngsters from U20s to fill the gaps. Lack of finishing was our major problem».

Keeping Pereyra on the bench:

«Pereyra featured in previous encounters. He can’t play them all. It’s not about the players individually».

On the fans’ reaction towards him:

«I can’t explain why fans are setting against me. A small section of the fans have been completely negative this season, not just towards me. I could handle the pressure, but players were affected. It was too much of a burden and they cracked».

On the responsibility of the players:

«We shouldn’t discredit all players. There is no hierarchy in the dressing rooms. Regardless of potential, that was too much of a burden. The roster lacked the necessary quality to claim the league title, as was expected of them this season. I believe that most players put on an effort, even today».

On the reflection of the season on him:

«The personal cost was huge, but I couldn’t refuse the position. I took the risk but it didn’t play off».

On the problems of PAOK:

«The team’s structure is to blame. There is no hierarchy in the dressing rooms. Issues surface because of huge egos and the team need to contain such situations. Hopefully those planning next season will do a good job and turn the situation around. I wish that the players will get a healthy environment to work in».
