Fernando Varela & Sons at PAOK

He belongs to the category of footballers who settled into matrimony really early. At the age of 18 he was already married and had his first son, Gustavo. Since then, Fernando Varela’s clan welcomed two more sons, Tomas and Lourenço.

26.09.2016

He chose to leave FC Steaua București for three very lively reasons and for his wife, Andreia. He was the captain of the Romanian side, but his family was living permanently in Portugal.

Apart from football motives, PAOK offered Fernando Varela the opportunity to be together with his loved ones and not just on Skype. Thessaloniki is now their home and the “Double-Headed Eagle” the team of the Varela boys.

Fernando isn’t the only Varela sporting a PAOK shirt. His acquisition meant also new signings for PAOK Academy. Gustavo and Tomas left the famous youth ranks of Sporting Clube de Portugal and joined the “Double-Headed Eagle”. The former is a striker for the U12s and the latter will play for the U9s.

The Varela boys responded to paokfc.gr’s invitation and held their first joint session in Toumba Stadium. After recovering from an initial stage fright, the youngsters gave their father and role model a tough time, scoring past him again and again. They have a great future. Minnow Lourenço will have to wait a bit, since he is just three years old. Until then, he will watch his father from the stands.
